Airtel and Vodafone have finally received carrier billing on Google Play Store in India. This will allow Airtel and Vodafone users to purchase apps, musics, games etc. from the Play Store with its cost reflected in their postpaid mobile bill.
In May, Google had announced Idea cellular to be the first carrier to receive this feature though it wasn’t immediate. Google India then presented Airtel and Vodafone partnership at the Google Playtime event in October in India.
Users can initiate carrier billing by going to the Play Store, Account, Payment methods. Activating this is simple and doesn’t take long. Your account will be verified by SMS. To use this billing method, each time you make a purchase, choose ‘Bill my Airtel account’ during the payment prompt. This is convenient for those users who are reluctant to use their Debit cards to make purchases on the Play Store.
The new payment method has already started rolling out and is happening in a phase by phase format based on compatibility. So far, this only seems to work for postpaid users and there is no confirmation as to whether prepaid users will be able to use this feature. Let us know in the comments if you are able to use Direct carrier billing (DCB).
