BBM for Android and iPhone was scheduled for a September 21 release worldwide as promised by the Canadian OEM but the scenario changed as an unreleased version of the app was leaked as an APK. The APK being downloaded via several file sharing sites caused volumes of traffic that impacted the systems at BlackBerry and hence they had to pause the rollout for a while. While the company is working on it round the clock, Andrew Bocking, head of BBM at BlackBerry wrote in a blog post that BBM for Android and iPhone will not be available this week.
In a recent blog post that Andrew published, he stated that the company was aware of an issue that the unreleased version of the leaked APK had and hence they started working on blocking the leaked APK before they could release the final version in the Play Store. However, since the leaked APK resulted in 1.1 million active users in the first 8 hours, it impacted the system in a way that the company could not possibly block the leaked version of the app. Hence they had to pause the rollout of the final version of the app. While the leaked version does not work anymore, the company is keen on blocking the app completely before they launch the final version for both Android and iOS. This makes it clear that the leaked version will not work even after the final version has been released. That said, I can confirm that you don’t download the APK from out site as it will never work.
Here is a quote from Andrew’s blog post:
We attempted to address the problems caused by the unreleased version throughout the day on Saturday, but as active users of the unreleased app neared a million – and accelerated – it became clear that the only way to address the issue was to pause the rollout for both Android and iPhone.
The team is now focused on adjusting the system to completely block this unreleased version of the Android app when we go live with the official BBM for Android app. We are also making sure that the system is reinforced to handle this kind of scenario in the future. While this may sound like a simple task – it’s not. This will take some time and I do not anticipate launching this week.
