You might be familiar with the Trebuchet Launcher and the Apollo Music Player – some apps that CyanogenMod team has released along with some CM10 build (also includes CM10 messaging app). Looks like CyanogenMod 10 team is conitnuing with steady development and had also included a file manager in their CM10 ROMs – the CM10 File Manager which has been ported to all devices that are running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich by kemonine96 onXDA-forums.
While you can run the app on all ROMs based on ICS, there are a few features that don’t work with this app and will hopefully be fixed with an update.
- NFC may not work right, if at all. I disabled some of the NFC code to get API level 14 compatibility
- If you run into a problem with the normal install process you’ll need to place the apk in /system/app.
The developer says that the app has been ported to CM9 ICS ROMs, however I have found the app working pretty well on Sony’s official ICS firmware and it will perhaps work well on all ICS based devices. You do not need root to install this app because you will have to install it as a usual app unless you face any problem. Also, after I installed the app as a user app, I could not browse the root files (my phone’s rooted). To browse root files, I might have to place the apk in /system/app fix the permissions and reboot.
The file manager looks neat and clean, works without any lags and might be my alternative (or perhaps a replacement) of ES File Explorer. If you wish to give it a try, go ahead and download it from the link below and let me know your experience with it in the comments.
