Install AOKP Android 4.2 Jelly Bean ROM On Your Sony Xperia Z

Being done with alm0st all the expected bug fixes, the Sony Xperia Z is on a roll in the streets while most of it’s competitors are still under the post production process. This might turn the tables round in the Xperia Z’s favor as the sales definitely count in as one of the most valiant factors that decide the success of a smartphone of this caliber. Although the Sony Flagship chips in with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean straight out of the box while the promised Android 4.2 update is already in the works, we invite the owners of the Xperia Z on a special treat baked in AOKP fashion.

Before you proceed with the installation, we recommend you to backup all data on your phone. To make backups easily, you can read our complete backup guide. If you do not have device drivers installed, you can download them here. We are not responsible for any damage your device might face with this guide – the chances in this case are very less though.

How to Install AOKP Android 4.2 Jelly Bean ROM On Your Sony Xperia Z

You should start by downloading the file from here and till then, Connect your Phone to the Computer via USB Cable so that you can copy the downloaded flashable zip file to the root of your sdcard which is the /sdcard/ folder. Now, disconnect your phone from the computer and then turn it off, re-insert the batteries and boot it into the Recovery mode. Before you proceed, please check whether you have made a nandroid backup in the recovery mode so that you can revert back to your previous ROM if you wish to. Now wipe all previous data/Do a factory reset including dalvik cache in order to avoid “Low memory” issues and then select the option to apply an update zip, and select the zip file you copied to the root folder of your sd card and flash the zip file you downloaded above. Now Flash the Gapps file in a similar fashion. If you’re done with that, go back and select “Reboot system now”.

Note: If your kernel hasn’t got a recovery installed, you should proceed after setting up the recovery via the Fastboot method. This is how it goes:

  1. Extract the contents of the zip downloaded above to the fastboot folder on your system(under the Android Library).
  2. Connect your phone to the PC in the fastboot mode and enter the following command.
    fastboot flash boot boot.img
  3. Reboot the device and try booting the device in the recovery by pressing Volume Up when the LED glows pink.

Please make a note that this boot up make take a bit longer than usual and hence be a little patient. If your phone booted up properly, let it get stable for a minute or two and holla! you’re home!
