Install ClockworkMod Recovery (CWM) on LG Optimus L3 E400

Posted by & filed under Optimus L3.

We have already discussed about how to root LG Optimus L3 which was quite an easy task and so is the procedure to install ClockworkMod Recovery. You may wonder why you should install ClockworkMod Recovery on your phone. The answer is quite simple – we are coming up with yet another post that lets you install Official CyanogenMod 9 ICS ROM on your LG Optimus L3. It is straight from CyanogenMod team and can be installed on your phone only via CWM.

Also, if you have CWM installed, you can make a nandroid backup of your phone’s stock firmware. A nandroid backup backs up all data on your phone including the system files and boot.img. This should be done before you wipe data while installing a custom ROM like the CM9. Once you have installed the custom ROM, you can go ahead and restore data from the nandroid backup. This will restore all data on your phone while it is running on CyanogenMod 9.

Sometimes, you may be strangled while trying to install CWM and so we recommend you to backup data on your phone from the steps given below.

Prerequisites

  • Back up all apps using ASTRO File Manager. You can get the APK files using ASTRO and later restore it. Rooted users have a better option of using Titanium Backup.
  • Back up all contacts to SD card.
  • Backup SMS on Android.
  • Backup call log on Android.
  • Have minimum 60% charge on your phone else you might get stuck while the update process is running on your device.
  • Remove any security or Anti-virus app if you have them installed.
  • Enable USB Debugging. This can be don by Settings>Applications>Development and making sure that USB Debugging is checked.

There are little chances that your device may face any issue. However, try this at your own risk. This process voids the warranty of your device.

Steps to Install CWM on LG Optimus L3 E400

Update: Since this process does not seem to work fine for some people, we recommend you to download ROM Manager and install CWM via the app. If you re unable to boot your phone, check how to unbrick LG Optimus L3.

  1. After you have backed up all data on your phone, download the necessary files for installation of CWM from here or from Mediafire.
  2. Extract the contents of the rar file to a separate folder in your computer.
  3. Make sure you have enabled USB Debugging on your phone as mentioned in the Prerequisites and then connect your phone to the computer via USB Cable.
  4. If you do not have the USB Drivers for your phone installed, your PC will not recognize your phone. Make sure you install them.
  5. After you connect your phone to the PC, head over to the folder where you have extracted the contents of the rar file and run the file CWM-installer.bat
  6. Your phone might reboot 3,4 or 5 times and finally the Command Prompt must read “Done” which proves that the installation is complete.
  7. So now you can boot into ClockworkMod recovery by turning off your phone and pressing the Volume Down button + Menu button + Power button simultaneously. An easier method is to use the Quick Boot (Reboot) App.

Once you have installed CWM, go ahead and taste ICS via CM9 from our next tutorial. If you face any issues, feel free to comment below.

    • http://www.blogotechblog.com Lalit Indoria

What happens when you select "Reboot system now" in recovery mode?

      • http://www.facebook.com/rachel.southcott.1 Rachel Southcott

It reboots and ended up on the recovery mode again. The version of my CWM is v5.8.4.5

        • http://www.blogotechblog.com Lalit Indoria

Try to make a factory reset and repeat the procedure. If you still get face the same problem, contact me here http://fb.me/lalitindoria
Quite a lot of people are facing this issue and I do not have the phone. I will have to tell you a few ADB commands and see if it works. If it does, I will update the post with methods to fix these issues.

          • http://www.facebook.com/rachel.southcott.1 Rachel Southcott

Done on doing factory reset and still it has no progress. It always comes back to CWM recovery mode again and again. I've added you already on FB.

  • Iw2

I had the same problem. Then I tried installing CWM using the rom manager from http://download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/RomMa
As long as the app has root permissions, it can install CWM and let you boot into recovery mode.

I've installed the cm9 but the only thing that irritates me is that it runs on too much contrast, gamma or something. Also the dpi seems to be low. Anyone has a fix? Thank you very much in advance.

That also happened to my phone after bricking it. What i did to fix it is i flashed the original firmware using the KDZ Updater, but it gave me the same problem (the White Screen). I just did a Hard Reset and there it is. It was fixed. Hope this helps…

  • Chingiz

Hello…I Install CM9 NIGTHLY on my L3 , but i have inverted colours. How can i fix that? or there any fix?

    • Lalit Indoria

Reflash and if it doesn't work well, you will have to revert back to stock. Few users say that it works well for them and for few it doesn't.

      • Chingiz

I read on forums! That people says Cyanogen 9 for e400 was made by old dsiplay drivers! and i have new e400R . so it means LG changed their displays for the new ones! Thank you for your reply! And if you know creators of CM9 for Optimus L3 please let them know about that!

        • Lalit Indoria

Thanks for the heads up. I will add it to the post and also let the CyanogenMod team know about this.

  • Rickvi

I have flashed CM9 and downloaded and flashed GAPPS but now my keyboard is patialy visible, can anyone provide me with the correct GAPPS used on my le400 ?

    Thanks in advance…

    • Lalit Indoria

Gapps has no connection with the keyboard. Does a custom keyboard app work?

  • Rickvi

I figured that Gapps has nothing to do with the keyboard, but still…

I didn't know I can install a custom keyboard, will report!!!

    Thanks for the fast reply!!!

  • Stereopheis

    Hi!

I can't install the CMW Recovery, because I get this massage every time when I try to run the CMW-installer.bat. I have the original firmware, the V10k, but I used the V10N before, but this didn't work on that too. The phone is rooted. The massage: <a href="http://kepfeltoltes.hu/130104/cmw _www.kepfeltoltes.hu_.jpg” target=”_blank”>http://kepfeltoltes.hu/130104/cmw <a href="http:/…” target=”_blank”>_www.kepfeltoltes.hu_.jpg
Can you tell me what is the problem? Thanks.

  • Angelo

why does my phone always go hard reset when I try to go to recovery mode?

    • Lalit Indoria

It means that CWM has not been installed properly.

  • Boris Blagojevic

I don't use any social network. Can I find you on Google Plus(G+)Social Network?

  • Problem

    Hi,

I tried to install ICS and i did but it didn't wanted to boot. I just got that little blue man standing and nothing else. So I tried to unbrick it using your method but my country was not in the list. So i checked another country and during the instalation it said that was an error. Now i have android 2.3.6 on my phone but my USB isn't working. The phone doesn't even recognize the charger so i cant charge it. Can you give me a solution as fast as you can because my battery will die. I want to enable the usb and try to install the ISC again.

    • Lalit Indoria

When the blue man (robot) comes, the phone has actually booted but is stuck on boot animation. You could actually do a hard reset. To do this remove battery and re-insert and then press the vol.down+home key+power button together.

      • YES!

Thanks for the reply. I installed CM9 – finally. But my USB isn't working again. The PC doesn't recognize my phone and I don't have Google play store. Can you tell how to fix these two?

        • Lalit Indoria

Flash Gapps zip file for Play Store, for USB, I think a reboot should work!

          • YES!

Yup, Gapps solved the problem. But I installed the old version again, cm9 was problematic. The problem with the USB isn't solved yet. Even on andorid 2.4 the pc doesn't recognize the phone. And when I plug in the charger there is no sound or notification that the battery is charging. I am hoping you can solve this.

          • YES

And now i have another problem. The phone isn't ringing nor vibrating. It just shows that someone is ringing. I checked the settings – they are ok. And another thing, the phone says my sd card is empty all though it's not. I tried another card and it works. How to fix this? Can i somehow delete everything and install android 2.4 from scratch?

          • lalitindoria

You can roll back to stock using this http://www.hackmyandroid.com/how-unbrick-optimus-… but the KDZ files aren't available as of now. Try to boot into recovery and go to advanced>fix permissions and reboot. See if it solves the problem.

      • Haroon

        Hi Lalit,

Even I am facing the same problem.Tried that hard reset however it goes back to clockmod recovery page where I did reboot system now. Again I am stuck with that boot (blue robot) animation. I tried with MIUI ROM even that gets stuck. However my base image which i have a backup which works fine when I restore it. Pls let me know how to solve this issue

        • Lalit Indoria

If wiping cache and dalvik cache doesn’t fix it, restore your backup!

  • Rudyard

I installed CM9 on my LG L3. It worked so fine. Fast and smooth UI. Until I noticed some bugs or whatever you might call it.

    1. There's no PLUS button in which I need to select contacts on "message".

The function in which you need to send group message, it's not there. :((

    2. There's no option to delete multiple contacts in "contacts".

    3. Whenever I want to end the call, the phone sleeps. I need to press the unlock/power button to keep it awake.

    4. There's no GOOGLE PLAY (at first!) You need to install or flash GAPPS. (please ninja romeo, include this on your tut.. thanks)

    5. After a week and my phone was not much loaded with apps. I just installed INSTAGRAM, FB MESSENGER, GROUPY (for group message purpose), TWEETCASTER and 2 games, BASKETBALL MANIA and PANDA RUN. There's like a135 mb free storage space and 800 + mb internal storage BUT WHY DOES MY phone keeps on FREEZING? :( Please give me answer to this. I am loving CM9 but with this, it breaks my heart guys =(((

    6. Every time I need to boot or whenever I remove the battery coz it freezes a lot, I need to press Volume Down, the home button and the power button at the same time. Can we just press the power button and not get the battery icon blinking? :(((((( BOOOOOOOHOOOO!

On the other hand what I like about this ICS CM9,

    1. voice search is accurate

    2. smooth UI

    3. The phone storage is pretty much accessible.

    4. Camera works so fine!

    • Lalit Indoria

Thanks for the feedback, but we are not ninja romeo!

  • Guilherme

    Hi Lalit,

Do you know if it works for the LG e405f, if not there is any way to instal CWM on it??

    Thanks

    • Lalit Indoria

No, this is only for E400.

  • Jairus

Is there a way to install it without internet?

    • Lalit Indoria

When you run the CWM-installer.bat file, you don’t need Internet.
