The OnePlus 3T and the Motorola Moto Z Play are two well priced, high performance smartphones. Both phones were released in 2016 (OnePlus 3T – November 2016, Moto Z Play – September 2016). No one can deny Motorola devices’ reliability and the OnePlus phones’ performance capabilities. OnePlus has always come out with power-house devices whose specs can take on high end-flagship devices. Whereas, the Moto series never fails to deliver a pocket friendly, Vanilla Android-like experience. In the end, when it comes down to which is the better handset, the choice is rather straightforward.
OnePlus 3T : 152.7 x 74.7 x 7.4 mm, 158 g, available in Gunmetal and Soft Gold color.
Moto Z Play : 156.4 x 76.4 x 7 mm, 165 g, available in Black and White color.
The OnePlus 3T features an aluminium uni-body design and a glass front whereas the Moto Z Play has an aluminium frame. The Moto Z Play is a bit thicker than its kin, the Moto Z but this gives the Moto Z Play a rugged feel with its prime build quality. This device is also pretty customizable (replaceable back panel). On the other hand, the OnePlus 3T has a more premium and well refined feel to it (body identical to the OnePlus 3). Coming to their speakers, both the speaker’s sound qualities are decent. Unfortunately, neither of them have dual front-facing speakers and that leaves something to be desired.
Conclusion : OnePlus 3T trumps the Moto Z Play with its aluminium uni-body and premium feel.
OnePlus 3T : 5.5 inches, 1080 x 1920 pixels (~401 ppi pixel density), Corning Gorilla Glass 4.
Moto Z Play : 5.5 inches, 1080 x 1920 pixels (~403 ppi pixel density).
The OnePlus 3T retains the same display panel as its predecessor, the OnePlus 3, with a 5.5-inch AMOLED display at 1080p resolution. It gives sharp images and vivid colors, masking out any jaggedness around text or icons. The Moto Z Play has the same display specs and looks essentially the same. It is pretty legible outdoors under direct sunlight.
Conclusion : The OnePlus 3T has the upper hand here because of the stronger Corning Gorilla Glass 4 display.
OnePlus 3T : 16 MP, f/2.0, phase detection autofocus, OIS and LED flash. 16 MP secondary camera.
Moto Z Play : 16 MP, f/2.0, phase detection and laser autofocus and a dual-LED (dual tone) flash. 5 MP secondary camera.
The OnePlus 3T camera has Optical Image Stabilization. Photos are highly detailed with good color reproduction. It even has a new HQ mode, which combines a few shots of the same frame to reduce noise. Interestingly, the phone has a 16 MP front camera, which will appeal to selfie enthusiasts. The Moto Z has 16 MP rear camera as well. Its daylight shots have good detail and color reproduction. Macros are also well-defined. It is tougher to focus on closer objects and low-light shots aren’t as consistent. Video recording for both devices are very good at Full HD and 4K.
Conclusion : Considering both front and rear cameras, the OnePlus 3T has our vote in this section.
OnePlus 3T : Qualcomm Snapdragon 821, Quad-core (2×2.35 GHz Kryo & 2×1.6 GHz Kryo), Adreno 530 GPU, 6 GB RAM.
Moto Z Play : Qualcomm Snapdragon 625, Octa-core 2.0 GHz Cortex-A53, Adreno 506 GPU, 3 GB RAM.
A simple look at the specs gives us the obvious winner. The general performance of the Moto Z Play is snappy and smooth. On the flip side, the OnePlus 3T is simply a power-house! Users have about 4 GB of RAM at their disposal and the device flies through benchmarks. Needless to say, performance is snappy, smooth and incredibly fluid. It can run heavy games like Asphalt 8 seamlessly. The OnePlus 3T has 64/128 GB internal memory variants whereas the Moto Z Play only comes with 32 GB ROM. Both devices come with Android 6.0 Marshmallow and are up-gradable to Android 7.0 Nougat. The OnePlus 3T runs Oxygen OS on top Android 6.0.
Conclusion : When it comes down to it, the OnePlus 3T overwhelms the Moto Z Play in terms of performance.
OnePlus 3T : Li-Ion 3400 mAh battery (Non-removable).
Moto Z Play : Li-Ion 3510 mAh battery (Non-removable).
Battery life is the one category where the Moto Z Play outshines the OnePlus 3T. For the same display size, the Moto Z Play has a larger battery capacity. Although the OnePlus 3T’s battery life is well above average and charges extremely quick (dash charging), the Moto Z outlasts the OnePlus 3T under constant media usage. The Moto Z Play should easily last a day under heavy use and a couple of days under light use.
Conclusion : In terms of battery life, the undisputed winner is the Moto Z Play.
Verdict: The OnePlus 3T please…
The OnePlus 3T is the obvious overall choice. OnePlus’ latest flagship is an all-rounder that can go toe to toe even with the Google Pixel. OnePlus 3T will leave you short of INR 29,999 (at amazon), as compared to Moto Z Play – INR 24,999. For the specifications and features the OnePlus 3T offers, it is worth the extra 5000 over the Moto Z Play.
