Root Samsung Galaxy S Advance I9070 Easily

Samsung I9070 Galaxy S Advance is yet another awesome phone from Samsung that comes with Touchwiz 4.0 UI. If you own a Samsung Galaxy S Advance I9070, you may wish to hack it and hence improve its performance in several ways like removing bloatware and increasing internal memory. Rooting this device will also let you automate tasks using one of my favorite applications, Tasker. Just like how rooting has its own advantages, it also has a few disadvantages as it incurs the risk of bricking your phone or landing into bootloops. Also, rooting would void the warranty of your device.

This procedure will probably not brick your device as it has been tested by developers at XDA. We will guide you through the process of backing up data on your Samsung I9070 Galaxy S Advance following which are the steps to root this device.

Backup Data & Prerequisites

The few points listed below will help you backup your data on Samsung I9070 Galaxy S Advance. You need to wipe data to update your firmware and hence  it is always a good idea to backup before you proceed with any rooting activity on your device.

  • Back up all apps using ASTRO File Manager. You can get the APK files using ASTRO and later restore it.
  • Back up all contacts to SD card.
  • Backup SMS on Android.
  • Backup call log on Android.
  • Make sure you have the recommended drivers installed.
  • Have minimum 60% charge on your phone else you might get stuck while the update process is running on your device.

Steps to Root Samsung I9070 Galaxy S Advance

  1. Download GT-I9070-root.rar to your computer.
  2. Extract the contents of the rar file to a separate folder in your PC.
  3. Run the file Odin3 v1.83.exe
  4. Enable USB Debugging on your phone by going to Settings>Applications and make sure that USB Debugging is checked.
  5. Boot your phone into Download mode. To do this, turn off your phone and then press and hold Volume Down button + Home button + Power button together.
  6. Now connect your phone to the Computer via USB Cable.
  7. The ID:Com Section in Odin should turn yellow. If it doesn’t there must be some problem with your USB Drivers.
  8. In the PIT section in Odin, select the file  GT-I9070_EUR_XX_8G_20111220_KL6.pit which is present in the extracted contents of the rar file.
  9. In the PDA section, choose rootkernel.tar.md5.
  10. Only Auto Reboot and F.Reset Time should be checked in Odin. Uncheck all other options.
  11. Click on Start and wait for the phone to reboot.
  12. Now you need to install Superuser and Busybox from Google Play Store or use Superoneclick to push Superuser to /system/app.
If you face any sudden reboots and lags after trying out this method, you may have a look at the solution given by Shenoy (follow the steps given after flashing the files using Odin). Thanks for the comment and the solution, Shenoy.

You now have a rooted phone. If you face any issues, feel free to comment below :)

  1. You are great!! My phone works fine, thanks

  2. it stuck in the setup connection…..

  3. Hi Lalit – I followed you instructions to the letter and all seemed well. However, my phone will no longer switch off – it only reboots each time I request a shut-down and sometimes it randomly reboots in the middle of a call. Can I stop that?
Also, in terms or removing the unwanted apps, what do I do next? I have rooted the phone, installed SuperUser and Busybox, what next?
Some help with this would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks.

  4. hey lalit… im thinking about rooting my phone, but i dont want to brick it.
i read a lot and i always find those files with the warning: only for version xxle2 and others… but i never find anything about my version.

Do you think it will work?

  5. Hey Lalit. Nice work of you here…
I bought this phone on vacation in Thailand, and need to flash/root it into Nordic style(Swedish is possible)
    I did manage to put in this files with Odin3 c1.85;
    I9070XXLE2_I9070OXXLD4_HOME.tar.md5
    GT-I9070_EUR_XX_8G_20111220_KL6.pit
But it still show THL version in KIES software…
How can i flash this to EU version, or NORDIC version?

    2.question…

    • You may wish to unlock your phone (if it is locked to a network). There is no official Jelly Bean for this device as of now!

      • It is not locket at all.
Maybe i forgot to activate some options before press START.?
Not sure how to do this, and maybe I wait until Jelly Bean is released…

        Thanks for reply!

  6. well i have done a lot of research for your problem. The thing is while rooting the device with above kernel has some side effects like sudden reboot problems. So you need to get back to original firmware kernel then only you can solve the problem.
