If you own a Sony Xperia device and are interested in hacking the OS on your phone, this news would sound great to you and also to the development community of Sony Xperia phones. Sony has announced its own FlashTool for Xperia devices which is currently in beta stage. FlashTool is a software that lets you flash stock Sony firmware to your phone easily.
Previously, the development community at XDA forums had developed FlashTool using which you can flash .ftf files, recoveries and kernels to your Xperia devices. But this time, it is official and you also don’t need to download any ftf file and place it in the firmwares folder of the FlashTool directory.
To use the FlashTool from Sony, your device should have an unlocked bootloader. Sony has always been supportive to the open Android community and also offers bootloader unlocking service. The introduction of FlashTool is their step ahead in this direction. However, flashing the stock firmware will not change the bootloader status of your device and it will remain unlocked which may lead to loss of device warranty.
Another great advantage of using FlasahTool is that you can choose between Gingerbread and ICS versions of the OS available for your phone. The firmware you flash would be highly stable with absolutely no bugs just like how you would have it when you buy a new phone.
When you connect your phone to the computer via USB in Flash mode (Turn off and press volume down key while connecting the phone to the PC), FlashTool will recognize your phone and will display the available official firmware for the phone including both Gingerbread and ICS. So you may now need not use the Sony PC Companion to upgrade your phone if you have unlocked the bootloader. For locked bootloaders, you may still have to use Sony PC Companion.
This tool is still in beta version and hence available only for Xperia S, Xperia arc and Xperia arc S. More devices will be added as and when the software is updated.
FalshTool can not be used in all countries due to distribution restrictions. It is available for the following countries:
