Sony Xperia Z Gets a Fully Stable Android 4.4 AOSP ROM

Android 4.4 is being developed for most of the flagship devices launched this year. Apart from HTC One and the Nexus devices, Sony Xperia Z now has a fully working Android 4.4 AOSP ROM. The previous builds of this ROM had some bugs but with the recent update everything seems to be fixed.

Two minor issues that you would like to know can be found below along with a workaround:

  • Selecting a Mobile network manually will cause the ‘Please wait…’ dialog to stay even after the phone registered to the network. Just hit the ‘home’ button to make the dialog vanish.
  • Syncing the Calendar with Google may not work on a fresh 4.4 installation. Reboot your phone 2 times and it should be fine. (Seems to be a gapps issue)

The credit for developing this ROM goes to pabx on XDA forums. Here is a video review of this ROM:

All you need to do is download the ROM from the XDA thread linked at the end of this post and place the ROM + Gapps zip files in /sdcard/ Make sure your device runs the latest CWM or TWRP recovery. Boot into recovery and flash the ROM . But before you do that, make sure you backup all data on your device using ourdata backup guide or using OBackup. Once the ROM boots, you can use Nandroid Manager to restore apps+data, calls, text messages and Android ID.
